The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 define manual handling as:
“…any transporting or supporting of a load (including the lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving thereof) by hand or bodily force”
More than a third of all over-three-day injuries reported to the HSE each year are caused by the transporting or supporting of loads by hand or bodily force – commonly known as manual handling. With statistics like that it is essential that you undertake manual handling assessments for your staff and ensure that they are adequately training in lifting techniques etc.
The process where hazards associated with manual handling are identified and risks evaluated, with the object of eliminating or reducing the risks to as low as is reasonably practicable.
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 has a clear hierarchy of control measures:
- Avoid hazardous manual handling operations so far as is reasonably practicable
- Assess any hazardous manual handling operations that cannot be avoided
- Reduce the risk of injury so far as is reasonably practicable.
