The relevant regulations are the Work at Height regulations 2005. Regulation 12, on the inspection of work equipment, applies only to work equipment to which Regulation 8 and Schedules 2 to 6 apply.

Every employer must ensure that, where the safety of work equipment depends on how it is installed or assembled, it is not used in any position unless it has been inspected after installation or assembly in that position.

Every employer must ensure that work equipment exposed to conditions causing deterioration which is liable to result in dangerous situations is inspected (a) at suitable intervals and (b) each time after the occurrence of exceptional circumstances which are liable to jeopardise the safety of the equipment. This is to ensure that safety and health conditions are maintained and that any deterioration can be detected and remedied in good time.

BS EN 365: 2004 recommends detailed inspection at least every 12 months. INDG367 recommends intervals not exceeding 6 months, or 3 months where the equipment is used in arduous conditions e.g. demolition, steel erection, scaffolding, steel masts or towers with sharp edges.
